The Story

A place where industry has always belonged

Long before European settlement, Muriwai was a place of production, movement and trade. Rangitāne o Wairau and other iwi shaped local argillite into toki (adzes) and tools, trading them throughout Aotearoa.

Hand-dug canals through wetlands connected communities and carried people and materials. One original canal still passes through Muriwai, linking its history of industry and trade with the development today.

Muriwai means the confluence of two or more streams. Rangitāne o Wairau connects the name to Waikārapi (Wairau Lagoons) and Te Pokohiwi o Kupe (Wairau Bar), places of confluence for generations.

Today, waterways and trade routes are reflected in road, rail and maritime links. Ports, established industry and new enterprise converge, creating opportunity.

Muriwai brings generations of industry and trade into a new era of connection and opportunity.
